Mortgage Rates Rise Following Following Fed Statement, Not Necessarily Because Of It

Mortgage rates moved higher today for the first time in nearly two weeks. Although the changes in lenders' rate sheets versus yesterday were largely a factor of late-day market gyrations that followed the afternoon's FOMC Announcement and Press Conference, the weakness in bond markets wasn't directly linked to any of the FOMC Headlines or any particular question/answer from Bernanke's press conference. In the grand scheme of things, the movement was small, but just enough relative to the day's flat...

Mortgage Rates See Biggest Drop in Over Three Weeks

Mortgage rates moved lower today at their fastest pace since February 25th's Italian election stalemate. Today's move is also bigger than the entire week of sideways-to-slightly-lower rates last week. That said, the first week of March (the one that included the Employment data), is sort of a dividing line in 2013's general trend toward higher rates. Everything before that Thursday is lower, everything after is higher, and today's big move brings us right back to that dividing line. That means a...

Mortgage Rates Struggle To Improve Despite Bond Market Strength

Mortgage rates are mixed to lower today, but some lenders are still in worse shape than yesterday afternoon's latest offerings. This stratification around unchanged levels belies the day-over-day changes in bond markets, including the mortgage-backed-securities (MBS) that most directly influence mortgage rates. That said, a few lenders did release positively revised rate sheets in the afternoon after a day of steady improvement in MBS. Best-Execution is still at 3.75% with 3.625% still viable for...

Mortgage Rates Vary By Lender After Friday's Rout

Mortgage rates are very slightly lower in many cases after surging on Friday to the highest levels in nearly 10 months. That said, some lenders continued higher today while others were essentially flat. Overall, the average Best-Execution rate is moderately lower today, but very close to Friday's latest levels. That means that the shift from 3.625 to 3.75% continues to be supported so far this week. 3.75% is the highest best-execution rate we've recorded since May of 2012. ( What is A Best-Execution...

Mortgage Rates Unchanged To Slightly Higher To Begin Week

Mortgage rates moved slightly higher in most cases on Monday, though some lenders were essentially unchanged from Friday's latest offerings. Despite the moderate weakness, with the exception of Friday, today's rates are in line with February lows, though the range has been narrow. 3.625% continues to be the most prevalent Best-Execution rate with reasonably priced "buy-downs" for those interested in paying more upfront cost in exchange for lower rate. Mortgage Rates Bounce Back To Begin The Week

Mortgage rates regained a good amount of lost ground today as most lenders' rate sheets were in line with or better than last week's rates. The overall movement wasn't enough to justify a shift back to 3.5% Best-Execution from the recently more prevalent 3.625%, but it's a step in that direction. The differences in rates would be more noticeable in terms of the closing COSTS or lender credit as opposed to the rates themselves. ( What is A Best-Execution Mortgage Rate? ) Bond markets were fairly calm...

Mortgage Rates Eke Out Minor Improvements After Late-Day Reversal

Mortgage rates were essentially unchanged Today. On average, rates were slightly higher to begin the day, but an afternoon reversal in bond markets was sufficiently strong to prompt many lenders to release positively revised rate sheets. That tipped the scales back toward a slight improvement on the day with Best-Execution for 30yr Fixed, Conventional loans continuing to hold in the 3.375% to 3.5% range. Mortgage Rates Improve On Average, But Not For Every Lender

Mortgage rates continued to inch lower on average after rising to the highest levels since September at the end of last week. There were no significant market moving events behind the move, but rather, rates markets are simply consolidating after last week's fast-paced changes. Those changes brought the Best-Execution rate for 30yr Fixed, Conventional loans to 3.5%, and for most lenders, that's where it remains, though the borrowing costs associated with that rate mostly moved lower today. Additionally...

Mortgage Rates Moderately Improved On Fiscal Cliff Headlines

Mortgage rates moved slightly lower on Thursday after markets received their first Fiscal Cliff update of the week. Earlier this morning, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said that over the Fiscal Cliff "looks like where we're headed." Stock prices and bond yields fell steadily following that headline, but ultimately leveled off in the afternoon. Despite improved trading levels in Financial Markets, lenders maintained relatively more conservative pricing strategies, with only moderate improvements...

Mortgage Rates Hold Ground After Rising On Friday

Mortgage rates are very slightly lower today compared to Friday's latest offerings. However, Friday's rates were the highest of the week after the stronger-than-expected jobs report gave a boost to stocks and did some damage to bond markets. With rates able to hold their ground today, Best-Execution rates for 30yr Fixed, Conventional loans remain in transit between 3.375% and 3.25% depending on the lender and scenario.
